The Applied Superconductivity Laboratory (ASL) welcomed Professor Qingjin Xu from the Institute of High Energy Physics, Chinese Academy of Sciences (IHEP-CAS). During the visit, Professor Min Zhang and Professor Weijia Yuan introduced ASL’s research activities and provided a tour of the laboratory’s facilities.

Following the tour, Professor Qingjin Xu delivered a series of technical presentations highlighting recent developments in superconducting magnet technologies for next-generation particle accelerators. The presentations outlined IHEP’s long-term roadmap for high-field magnet research and development, including work supporting future accelerator concepts such as CEPC-SPPC and international collaborations associated with CERN’s High-Luminosity Large Hadron Collider (HL-LHC).

Particular attention was given to the development of hybrid low-temperature and high-temperature superconducting (LTS/HTS) magnets, including hybrid dipole magnet programmes that have achieved magnetic fields exceeding 14 T at 4.2 K. The presentations also showcased recent progress in iron-based superconducting (IBS) technologies and their application in future high-field magnet systems.

In addition, Professor Qingjin Xu provided updates on ongoing accelerator magnet projects, including the development and successful delivery of CCT magnets for the HL-LHC programme.

The visit provided an excellent opportunity for ASL researchers and students to learn about recent advances in accelerator magnet development, exchange ideas with colleagues from IHEP-CAS, and explore future directions in advanced superconducting technologies for scientific and research infrastructure.
