We are delighted to announce that Shiyao Yu, a PhD student within the Applied Superconductivity Laboratory (ASL), has successfully passed his viva and completed his PhD at the University of Strathclyde.

His research, titled “Integrated Electrical System Modelling and Protection Framework for the STEP Prototype Powerplant Microgrid”, focused on developing an integrated electrical modelling and protection framework for the electrical network of the STEP Prototype Powerplant (SPP), supporting the reliable operation of future fusion energy systems.

Throughout his doctoral research, Shiyao developed and evaluated advanced electrical system models and protection strategies to support normal operation, fault analysis and protection coordination across multiple operating modes. His work addressed key challenges associated with integrating different power sources and maintaining secure and reliable operation within a complex plant-scale microgrid.

The project contributes to the ongoing development of electrical infrastructure for future fusion power plants and supports the wider goal of delivering reliable, low-carbon energy technologies.

We warmly congratulate Dr Shiyao Yu on this outstanding achievement and wish him every success in the next stage of his career.
