Researchers from the Applied Superconductivity Laboratory (ASL) participated in the Superconducting Machines & Systems event organised by Engineer a Career at The Social Hub, Glasgow.

The event brought together students, early-career engineers, academics and industry representatives to explore the future of superconducting technologies and their applications in fusion energy, power transmission, transport and aerospace systems. The panel featured Professor Weijia Yuan, ASL Research Fellow Alexander Shchukin, Professor Markus Mueller from the University of Edinburgh, and Josh Robertson, founder of Engineer a Career.

The discussion focused on the opportunities and challenges associated with the development and commercial deployment of superconducting technologies. Particular emphasis was placed on the skills, collaboration and innovation required to accelerate the adoption of superconducting solutions across multiple sectors.

Alongside his current research activities at ASL, Alexander Shchukin contributed perspectives drawn from previous industrial experience in superconducting materials manufacturing, providing insight into the practical challenges of scaling superconducting technologies from research laboratories to commercial applications.

The event provided an excellent opportunity to engage with students and young engineers exploring future career paths in advanced energy and transport technologies. Discussions highlighted the importance of strengthening connections between academia, industry and the next generation of engineers to support the development of future superconducting machines and systems.

ASL would like to thank Josh Robertson and the Engineer a Career team for organising a successful event and fostering discussions on the future of engineering and superconducting technologies.

More information about future events is available on the Engineer a Career website.
