Our student Dr Fangjing Weng successfully obtained a PhD degree in Nov 2021 for his project “Fully high temperature superconducting (HTS) machine for future electric aircraft”. Dr Weng has started a new job as an aerospace designer at the China Academy of Space Technology in 2022. We thank Dr Weng for his great contribution to the group and wish Dr Weng best of luck for his new career.

Two of Dr Weng’s key publications during his PhD can be found below:

Fully superconducting machine for electric aircraft propulsion: study of AC loss for HTS stator

    F. Weng, M. Zhang, T. Lan, Y. Wang and W. Yuan

In order to evaluate the AC loss of superconducting stator windings in a rotational machine environment, we designed and built a novel axial-flux high temperature superconducting (HTS) machine platform.

Transient test and AC loss study of a cryogenic propulsion unit for all electric aircraft

    F. Weng, M. Zhang, A. Elwakeel, T. Lan, N. McNeill and W. Yuan

The paper provides initial insights into the interaction between superconducting machines and cryogenic power electronics within a cryogenic propulsion unit.
